August 2 to August 28 Senior Art Show At Norfolk Library The Center’s art classes will display their artwork at the Norfolk Library for the month of August. The show will feature watercolors, drawings, paintings, knitting, photographs, diamond art, and much more. An Art Show Opening Celebration will be held on Monday August 4 at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Monday, August 4 at 11 a.m. Armchair Travel to Madrid See this modern city as well as reminders of ancient Roman rule, Islam and Jewish influences, and Spain’s golden age. Led by Gene Flynn, who has taught at the College of Lake County and Harper College and serves on the board of the Institute for Continued Learning at Roosevelt University. Churros will be served. Tuesday, August 5 at noon Lunch & Learn: Food & Mood--Emotional Impact of Food On Seniors: Nutrition plays a vital role in emotional wellbeing. A balanced diet rich in nutrients can help stabilize mood, improve cognitive function, and reduce feelings of anxiety or depression. Poor eating such as consuming too much sugar or processed foods can lead to energy crashes, irritability, and emotional distress. Led by registered dietitian Judy Palken, MNS, RD, LDN. Monday, August 11 at 11 a.m. Virtual History of New England Sweets: Doughnuts, Bonbons and Whoopie Pies Author and photographer Susan Mara Bregman will discuss her book, “New England Sweets: Doughnuts, Bonbons & Whoopie Pies” and NE’s enduring love affair with sweets. The region is home to an extraordinary variety of baked, fried, dipped, sugared and frozen confections. From Fluffernutters to whoopie pies, Susan explores this sugary legacy, uncovering the stories behind the treats that sweetened NE’s culinary landscape. Whoopie pies will be served. RSVP required.
Wednesday, August 13 at 1 p.m. Tom Cleverdon Himself Concert Resident Tom Cleverdon is back! He has played guitar and sung for more than 40 years. His music focuses on folk, country, pop and classics by various artists from the Kingston Trio and Glen Campbell to Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, and Lee Greenwood. Friday, August 29 at 11 a.m. Virtual NYC Tour of the Gilded Age Mansions of Museum Mile Stroll up Fifth Avenue from the Frick Collection to the Cooper Hewitt Museum and see turn-of-the-20th Century homes. Learn stories about their wealthy owners, like Pulitzer, Whitney, and Carnegie. Led by Ginny Poleman, owner of New York City Encounters, a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, docent for the Municipal Art Society, and educational guide at Manhattan’s largest art museum.
