State awards $5 million in fire equipment grants
The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced that 307 Massachusetts fire departments will share $5 million in grant funding to support the purchase of firefighter safety equipment.
Locally, the Norfolk Fire Department received $19,000, while the Wrentham Fire Department was awarded $15,250.37 through the program.
The funding comes through the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program, which reimburses departments for nearly 100 types of equipment. Eligible items include hoses and nozzles, turnout gear, radios, thermal imaging cameras, hazardous gas meters, hand tools, and extrication equipment.
According to the state, the equipment purchases can help departments meet Occupational Safety & Health Administration and National Fire Protection Association safety standards.
The most commonly funded items in this year’s grants include hoses and fittings, gloves, hoods, coats, boots, helmets, gas detectors, and protective gear such as SCBA facepieces and ballistic equipment.
