Norfolk American Legion Planning Trip to Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Norfolk American Legion Post will host a special day trip to the renowned Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the day after Memorial Day.

The group will travel by motorcoach, departing from Norfolk at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $85 for veterans and $120 for non-veterans.

The trip will be hosted by Norfolk American Legion Post Commander Frank Zolli, who served two years aboard the USS Intrepid during the Vietnam War, making the visit a unique opportunity to tour the historic aircraft carrier with a veteran who once served on it.

The USS Intrepid is one of the nation’s most celebrated military ships. Commissioned during World War II, the aircraft carrier saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater, surviving five kamikaze attacks and a torpedo strike while helping defeat Japanese forces. The ship later served during the Vietnam War and also participated in NASA space capsule recovery missions.

After being decommissioned in 1974, the vessel was transformed into the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, opening to the public in 1982. Today, the museum showcases an impressive collection of historic aircraft, military artifacts, and space exploration exhibits.

Among its highlights are the Space Shuttle Pavilion featuring the Enterprise space shuttle, the British Airways Concorde supersonic jet, and the guided missile submarine Growler. Visitors can explore the flight deck, hangar deck, and numerous interactive exhibits that bring naval aviation, space exploration, and American military history to life.

The museum offers an immersive experience aboard a real aircraft carrier and is an exciting destination for veterans, families, children, and anyone interested in World War II history, the Vietnam War, naval aviation, or NASA.

Those interested in joining the trip or seeking more information should contact Commander Frank Zolli at 508-520-2751 or email [email protected].
