Is Your Child’s Backpack Putting Them at Risk?

Dr. Rochelle Bien, Dr. Molly Rappaport & Dr. Michael Goldstein

As technology is advancing, and children are carrying laptops, tablets, sports uniforms, and the typical school necessities in their backpacks, it is crucial to address the risk of musculoskeletal symptoms. While back pain is an inconvenience in itself, it is also linked to poor academic outcomes, school absences, altered posture and gait, and further exacerbates the risk of skeletal deformities, like scoliosis.

Because the weight of a backpack can displace the center of gravity in a child, postural adjustments take place that can lead to potential injury. Chiropractors can help to identify spinal misalignment, reduce the stress on the joints through manipulation, and ultimately give your student postural and ergonomic exercises to restore balance between visits.

Jacob is a 15 year old high school student who presented to the office with complaints of mid back pain and stiffness 6 months into his sophomore year. Through education of weight distribution, proper carrying positions, and duration of backpack wearing, this student was able to make at home changes in conjunction with chiropractic in office care.

Chiropractic adjustments of the spine allows for built up gasses in the joint space to be replaced with fluid and move more freely - ultimately, reducing painful symptoms. In conjunction with soft tissue modalities - ie. myofascial release, cupping, scraping, chiropractic care can restore proper position and movement of the spine.
