Q & A With Healthy KP for Freshmen Parents: Supporting a Healthy Transition to High School

Aug 27, 2025 10:07AM ● By Staff Member

Q: What has Healthy KP been doing to support students before they enter high school?

A: Healthy KP has been actively involved in providing prevention education and fostering positive experiences for students throughout middle school. Through support for school dances, family events and fun, engaging activities, Healthy KP encourages healthy choices and helps students bond in safe, substance-free environments. These experiences help lay the groundwork for confident, informed decision-making before students even step into high school.

Q: What’s the story behind the “graduation t-shirts?”

A: At the end of 8th grade, every student received a Healthy KP Graduation Shirt as a celebration of their achievement and a reminder that they’re entering high school with the support of a community that truly cares about their well-being and success.

Q: Is there anything being given to help them adjust to 9th grade?

A: Yes! As your student prepares to enter high school, the transition can feel exciting — and a little overwhelming. At the freshman orientation event, all 9th grade students will receive a Healthy KP Freshman Planner- a practical and supportive tool designed to help them stay organized and confident as they transition into high school. Inside they will find:

Study and time-management tips

Staff contacts and school schedules

Wellness and prevention reminders

Q: Why is freshman year such an important time for prevention?

A: Research shows that early high school is a critical time for substance use prevention. It’s when peer influence intensifies and students are navigating greater independence. Having open conversations at home and reinforcing healthy choices can make a huge difference. Healthy KP provides parent resources to help — just visit healthykp.org for talking tips, facts, and tools to guide these conversations.

Q: What ongoing opportunities are there for students to get involved with Healthy KP?

A: Healthy KP has a growing Student Coalition that will be expanding this year. It’s a chance for students to take the lead in prevention efforts, plan fun events, and make a positive impact in their schools and communities. Encourage your student to stop by the Healthy KP booth at the freshman orientation event to learn how they can get involved.

Formed in 2018, Healthy KP is a community-based group of volunteers from the tri-town communities working together to prevent and reduce the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco products among our youth. In December of 2020, Healthy KP was awarded a Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant allowing the coalition to strengthen community collaboration and engagement to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. By implementing evidence-based prevention programs, strengthening partnerships and building connections through community events, Healthy KP has made progress in reducing rates of youth use.
